Campo Santa Margherita

... situated on the north side consecrated on 853 by the Doge Pietro Tradonico.
It was the place of the fish & vegetables market and still nowadays this tradition continues. At the moment there are just 3 fisherman’s stalls, with Adriatic sea and lagoon fish and mussels, and sometimes they still use the old tradition of the marble plaque showing the minimum measurements to sell fish.
The campo was reduced to the actual size during the second half of the ‘800, when some canals were filled up: for example Varoteri School used to face one of this canal, nowadays the building stands alone in the middle of the square.
Nowadays its closeness to Cà Foscari University and St. Lucia train station make of this square a very important aggregation point for young and old people, in which breathe a little bit of real Venetian atmosphere and watch the usual jokes to the just-graduated people, funny tradition of our universities.
