Punta Della Dogana

...There is a building ( bordering to the church of Salute) projected by Giuseppe Benoni between 1677 and 1682 made to host the custom Storage, here all goods coming from overseas to the Serenissima Republic were checked and weighted.
On war times it becomes a defence strategic point, from the Punta della Dogana to the opposite side of the Grand Canal a big and long iron chain was pulled to close the access to enemy ships.
Today those buildings are an important exhibitions centre for the contemporary art owned by the French tycoon Francois Pinault (also own Palazzo Grassi).
