Redentore Church

...it didn’t stop to kill people, the government of the city decided to ask the Divine protection, planning the construction of a massive building, which will be unveiled to celebrate the end of the pestilence. That day a bridge of boats was built, going from St. Mark’s square to Giudecca island, and pilgrims walked on it until the island, tradition still alive nowadays (every third Sunday of July).
On Giudecca Island, part of Dorsoduro Sestriere, the building was assigned to the Cappuccini monks, who determined its plan and the construction materials (for example, marble was avoided). The inside was studied and planned by Palladio, who was able to merge the nave, the side chapels, the triple lancet cell and the choir, producing a refined harmony.
The façade represents Palladio’s style, with overlapping classical frontages, which solves the strong connection between the high nave and the shorter side chapels.
Very important is the relationship between the Church and the Redentore day, celebrate every year by Venetians and people all over the world. People use to invade Saint Mark’s basin and have dinner on boats or along the Fondamenta facing the water, waiting for the huge fireworks at the end of the day.
