Zitelle Church

...Saint Mark’s basin, in Dorsoduro Sestriere.
The name comes from the annex, an ex-hospice for unmarried girls, in which they used to know the art of the needle lace, saving them from the prostitution which was not forbidden during the Venetian Republic.
The plan was attributed to Palladio because of the analogies with others buildings in Venice, but there are no written proofs, just because of the works started after the death of the artist (1581) and the church was consacrate in 1588, but purchasing of material was documented from 1575.
The polygonal plan is preceded by the double styles facade, dominated by the tympanum with its side bell towers.
The big dome dominates the building, also playing an important role inside the church. We can not forget the main altar with Francesco Bassano’s painting (Presentazione di Maria al Tempio) and Palma Il Giovane arts.
